By Juli Johnson, NTP

You wake up with a relatively flat stomach. By lunchtime, you look six months pregnant. By dinner, you’re unbuttoning your pants and wondering what the hell happened.

Sound familiar?

Here’s what makes it even more frustrating: You’re doing everything “right.”

You’re eating healthy. You’re avoiding gluten (maybe you’ve been gluten-free for years). You’re drinking plenty of water. You’re taking probiotics. You’ve cut out dairy, or sugar, or both.

And yet… the bloating persists.

I see you. I’ve been you. And I’m here to tell you that you’re not crazy, you’re not broken, and there IS a reason this is happening.

The Problem with “Just Eat Healthy”

When I was first diagnosed with celiac disease in 2001, I was extremely sick. Vomiting, severe diarrhea – my body was literally attacking itself. That’s what happens with autoimmune diseases like celiac. Your immune system sees gluten as a threat and damages your gut in the process.

Going gluten-free wasn’t a trendy diet choice for me. It was survival. And honestly? I was terrified of adding MORE restrictions. I’d already lost the ability to eat the way I had my entire life up to that point. The last thing I wanted was to eliminate even more foods.

So I didn’t cut out dairy or soy or any of the other things you hear about now. I just went gluten-free. And within two weeks, my body started healing. The vomiting stopped. The diarrhea got better. I could finally start to function again.

But here’s what I learned over the next 24 years: Just because you remove gluten (or any other trigger food) doesn’t mean you’ve addressed everything that’s going on in your body.

And that’s where bloating comes in. Because even years after going gluten-free, many of my clients (and yes, sometimes me too) still deal with uncomfortable bloating. Why? Because bloating isn’t just about WHAT you’re eating. It’s about what’s happening in your body when you eat it.

What’s Really Causing Your Bloating

Let me get real with you for a minute. Bloating is a symptom, not a root cause. And your body is trying to tell you something.

Here are the most common underlying issues I see with my clients:

1. Your Digestive System is Struggling

If your stomach isn’t producing enough acid (yes, LOW stomach acid is often the problem, not high), or if your pancreas isn’t releasing enough digestive enzymes, your food isn’t breaking down properly. That partially digested food sits in your gut, fermenting and creating gas.

Even if you’re eating the “healthiest” foods on the planet, if your body can’t break them down, you’re going to bloat.

2. Your Gut Bacteria is Out of Balance

Years of antibiotics, stress, processed foods (yes, even gluten-free processed foods), and other factors can throw off the delicate balance of bacteria in your gut. When the “bad” bacteria outnumber the good, they feast on whatever you eat and produce excess gas as a byproduct.

This is why that “healthy” salad might be making you more bloated than a piece of sourdough bread used to.

3. You’re Not Absorbing Nutrients Properly

If your gut lining is damaged (hello, leaky gut), you’re not absorbing the nutrients from your food. This means you could be eating all the right things and still be malnourished at a cellular level.

And when your body isn’t getting what it needs, everything gets thrown off – including digestion.

4. You’re Dehydrated (But Not in the Way You Think)

You might be drinking tons of water, but if you’re not getting enough electrolytes, that water isn’t actually hydrating your cells. Your body needs proper mineral balance to function optimally, including proper digestion.

This is why I personally use and recommend doTERRA’s Recharge electrolyte drink to my clients. It’s not just about drinking water – it’s about giving your body the minerals it needs to actually USE that water effectively.

5. Your Nervous System is Stuck in “Fight or Flight”

If you’re constantly stressed (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?), your body stays in sympathetic mode. And when you’re in fight-or-flight mode, digestion shuts down. It’s a survival mechanism.

You could be eating the perfect meal, but if you’re stressed while eating it, your body literally cannot digest it properly.

Why Just Eliminating Foods Isn’t Enough

I know it’s tempting to keep cutting things out. Eliminate gluten. Then dairy. Then grains. Then FODMAPs. Then everything fun and delicious.

But here’s what I’ve learned after two decades of living with celiac disease and working with frustrated clients: Elimination without investigation is just restriction without results.

Yes, there are times when removing certain foods is necessary. But if you’re not addressing WHY your body is reacting to those foods in the first place, you’re just playing whack-a-mole with symptoms.

What Actually Works (The Unsexy Truth)

Real healing isn’t about the latest supplement or the trendiest diet. It’s about understanding YOUR body and what it specifically needs.

Here’s what I focus on with my clients:

Real, whole food that nourishes your body. Not processed gluten-free products. Not another restrictive diet. Real food that gives your body the building blocks it needs – adequate healthy fats, quality proteins, and the right carbohydrates for YOU.

Supporting what YOUR body needs. Through assessments and tracking, we figure out where your body needs support. Then we use targeted supplements to fill in the gaps. Because every body is different, and what you need might be completely different from what someone else needs.

Supporting digestive function. We look at stomach acid production, enzyme activity, bile flow – the actual mechanics of digestion. Because if food isn’t breaking down properly, nothing else matters.

Healing the gut lining. If your gut is leaky, we need to repair it. This isn’t a one-supplement fix. It’s a comprehensive approach that includes the right foods, targeted support, and time.

Proper hydration and mineral balance. Making sure your body has what it needs at a cellular level to function optimally – including things like quality electrolytes.

Addressing stress and lifestyle factors. Because you can eat all the right things, but if your body is stuck in stress mode, digestion won’t work properly.

The Part Where I’m Honest With You

This isn’t a quick fix. I wish I could give you a magic supplement or a 7-day protocol that would make all your bloating disappear forever.

But that’s not how real healing works.

What I CAN promise you is this: When you finally understand what’s actually going on in YOUR body, when you address the root causes instead of just managing symptoms, things start to shift.

You start to feel lighter. More comfortable. More like yourself.

You stop living in fear of food. You stop constantly restricting. You start actually enjoying meals again.

And yes, the bloating gets better. Sometimes it goes away completely.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

I had a client who came to me frustrated and exhausted. She’d been dealing with uncomfortable bloating for years and couldn’t figure out why.

Through our work together, we focused on what HER body specifically needed. Not what worked for someone else. Not the latest trend. What HER body was asking for.

We looked at her foundation – making sure she was getting adequate healthy fats, quality proteins, and the right carbohydrates for her body. We added targeted supplements to support what her body was lacking. We worked on proper hydration with quality electrolytes.

Because here’s the thing: every body is different. What your body needs might be completely different from what my body needs. And that’s okay. That’s actually how it’s supposed to work.

Three months later, she texted me a photo of herself in a fitted dress. “First time in two years I haven’t looked pregnant by dinner,” she wrote.

That’s what’s possible when you stop playing guessing games and start addressing what’s actually happening in YOUR body.

So What Now?

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Okay, but how do I figure out what MY body needs?” – I hear you.

This is exactly why I do what I do. Because trying to figure this out on your own, through Google searches and elimination diets and random supplements, is exhausting. And often ineffective.

You need someone who can look at the whole picture. Who understands how digestion actually works. Who’s been through their own healing journey and knows how messy and non-linear it can be.

You need someone who won’t just hand you another list of foods to avoid, but will help you understand what your body is trying to tell you.

You need support. Not another diet.
